As travelling from the UK to Europe is changing to make border crossings safer (and quicker) for all, new informations are to be known before coming to the EU.
These two novelties will present as follow :
- Entry/Exit System known as EES : a digital border registration.
- European Travel Information and Authorisation System as ETIAS : a pre-travel authorisation to make online (lauching by the end of 2026).

EES : Entry/Exit System
When will it be introduced?
The European Union introduced this system on 12 October 2025.
Its full rollout is expected to take place over a period of six months.
Who is it for?
This system will be used for all British and non-European citizens travelling to a Schengen country for short stays (up to 90 days within a 180-day period)_ _ _ _ _ _ _
No prior registration is required.
Just make sure you bring a valid passport.
The initial collection of biometric data will take a few minutes, and you may be asked questions about the nature of your trip.
Your EES file is valid for three years.
→ It means that if you return to a Schengen country during this period, you will only need to scan your fingerprints or photo on your next visits.
No Cost : It's free.
Please, note that the system is completely free for travellers to use.

ETIAS : European Travel Information and Authorisation System
When will it be introduced?
The EU hopes to launch the system when the EES is fully operational, meaning towards the end of 2026.
Who is it for?
The ETIAS system applies to all non EU passport holders (e.g : UK). All adults and children will need to obtain ETIAS, unless they are EU residents or hold a long-stay visa.
People under the age of 18 or over the age of 70 are exempt from the fee, but everyone must still apply._ _ _ _ _ _ _
How do I apply for ETIAS? What's its price?
As this is an exclusively digital system, applications can only be made online, via the official EU ETIAS website or app.⚠️Beware of unofficial websites that charge additional fees.
You will need a valid passport (machine-readable, valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure date), an email address and a debit or credit card to pay the fee of approximately £17 (€20) per person.
How long is it valid for?
Once approved, the authorisation is sent by email and linked to the passport used for the application.
It is valid for three years from the date of authorisation or until the passport expires.
